Celeste Fraser Delgado is a journalist, academic, and unabashed do-gooder. She covers the Worthy Causes column on MOLI and also teaches at Barry University in Miami. As a community arts activist, she has worked with teen mothers, welfare recipients, women in prison, the homeless, and youth in crisis. Currently she is involved in the Urban Book Club — a reading and writing workshop with youth in the Miami Bridge youth crisis center. She is also working on Double the Vote (www.doublethevote.com), a campaign to double the number of registered voters who participate in local elections.

Don't Thank Me

I spent most of the holiday season cleaning out my house and carting bags of clothes, books, and CDs to the local library and to a local thrift store run by a charity. I am always embarrassed when the people receiving these "donations" thank me; they're doing me a favor by taking junk off my hands. I get to be the "do-gooder" here because there are too many people in our country whose jobs don't pay enough for them to throw their money away on stuff they don't need, like I do.

Need Comes Knocking

A month or so ago, I opened my front door to find an elderly neighbor standing on the porch. She is not my next-door neighbor or a directly across-the-street neighbor. In fact, she lives across the street and three houses down. Our neighborhood is zoned for single-family homes, but the 78-year-old widow from Jamaica rents out rooms to make ends meet. My introduction to her came when a car belonging to a tenant slammed into my car and destroyed the alignment.
