About Spike Gurney

View Profile

Spike Gurney

What began as a hobby for Spike Gurney transformed into a full-time position as a professional tennis player. Spike was drawn to tennis at a young age because of the individual results of winning a match versus other team sports where the results are based on the success of your team. With little means to join a club, take tennis lessons and purchase pricey equipment, Spike began playing tennis with a friend at a local park. Now, Spike teaches tennis at the Palm Beach Country club to students looking to improve their tennis game and take pleasure in the sport.

Education Equalizer
By Steve Kettmann/Courtesy of Good Magazine.com

Something must be wrong with Caesar Mickens Jr. The man earned his PhD. in education from Michigan's Wayne State University and went on to serve 27 years in Detroit's notorious public school system. Mickens should be jaded by now, or simply worn out. Instead, he sounds almost giddy as he talks about his new job as the principal of the high school at Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in Las Vegas, a charter school founded in 2001 by the former tennis star, with a mandate to change how we think about educating our children.

Real Sports 2.0?
By Donnell Alexander/MOLI

One doesn't have to have worked for ESPN to have found the product mock-worthy, but it helps. That these above-average people put in so much effort to make such a dumb product just blew me away. Now in a stunning change of strategy, the sports network brings you "E:60," an hour's worth of compelling, uncondescending magazine-style news.

I love watching people play tennis. It's a fab sport, I can't play myself... mind you I've never tried. I suppose there's always a first time.
