HOT GLASS WORKS

About Jim Sammarco

View Profile

Jim Sammarco

Jim Sammarco has been working with glass for over twenty years. He began his career designing patterns for stained and etched glass. In order to challenge himself in that medium, he learned to sandblast and fabricate leaded glass. This began a journey of glass knowledge and techniques that continues today.

After spending time in Murano, Italy, Jim moved to Seattle, Washington, to work at the boathouse for Dale Chihuly. Working there he learned from some of the most experienced glassblowers in the world

As Managing Artist for Hot Glass Works, Jim designs and coordinates the commercial and specialty work in addition to running the day-to-day operation of the hotshop and gallery.

He continually pursues the creation of new and unusual art in glass utilizing combinations of style and technique. Jim's abilities enable him to work closely with other local, national and international glass artists in his search for the truly unique.

It's Alive!
By Wendy Case/MOLI

In the new movement known as bio art, scientists and technology experts are using craft and chemistry to create new forms of life. Though it sounds more like the fiction of Frankenstein than the Whitney Biennial, artists like Adam Zaretsky, Julia Reodica, and Eduardo Kac use bacteria, living tissue, and other organisms in work that includes everything from growing replacement hymens to implanting jellyfish genes into a rabbit embryo to produce a live rabbit that glows in the dark.
