View Profile

Stephen Hyde

Stephen Hyde was born in Nottinghamshire. After studying at Ampleforth College he graduated from London University with a BA Honours Degree in Modern History. He then turned his attention to photography, partly inspired by the fact that his great grandfather was the influential Victorian photographer P.H. Emerson.

He has photographed many celebrities and has worked, among others, for The Sunday Times Magazine, The Telegraph Magazine, You Magazine and ES as well as doing many book jackets.

He was exhibited in the exhibition 'Twenty for Today' at the National Portrait Gallery in London, and many of his images are in the permanent collection there. He has also featured in the Royal Photographic Society International Exhibition of Photography.

More recently, he has been working in the commercial field with clients including British Airways, Deloitte, Barclays Bank, Natwest Bank, Mobil, Texaco, Tesco, Accenture, Veuve Clicquot and many more. He works internationally & recently took the photographs for a new brochure and website for the exclusive island of Fregate

In 2006 he wrote the introduction to The Old Order & The New a new definitive book on PH Emerson to accompany the 2006 exhibition at the National Media Museum in Bradford and the 2007 exhibition at The Getty in Los Angeles. He can be heard as a voice-over on the Getty website.

Jonathan Mannion

Jonathan Mannion, 36, is a professional photographer, capturing intimate moments that readers of popular magazines, often, remember sooner than the accompanying articles. Mannion, a Manhattan resident and Cleveland native, is not only a photographer, but a photography fan, too. In his pastime, he reads photography books. Currently, he's reading Henri Cartier-Bresson, a French photographer that hid from Nazis during WWII. "He's arguably another one of the great photographers known for the decisive moment – the moment when you snap a frame and what makes it different from any other that could be taken," says Mannion.

Teenage Riot
By Wendy Case/MOLI

To take a look at Black Flag frontman/writer/actor Henry Rollins' steely-eyed, square-jawed mug these days, it's difficult to picture the intense singer/spoken word artist as a fresh-faced, teenage goof — but not for photographer Susie J. Horgan. While studying photography at Georgetown in Washington, DC, in the early '80s, Horgan took a job scooping ice cream at the local Häagen-Daz. It was there that she met Rollins, a fellow employee, and began her immersion into DC's burgeoning hardcore scene.

Fiona Lowry

The Australian landscape, the subject of endless tributes by artists of all media, is given an intriguing and mysteriously-sexual twist by Fiona Lowry. In her recent show at Sydney's Gallery Barry Keldoulis, called "I'm having dreams about you," Lowry has painted dream-like images of the bush. Instead of flora and fauna, she shows shadowy human figures, some engaged in overtly sexual behavior, others more ambiguous, all alluring. To create these delicate spidery effects Lowry uses airbrush, a material more often associated with the boldness of Howard Arkley, say, or graffiti art, combined with photography. Airbrushed in washed out pinks, greens and browns, the work makes me wonder if I've missed out on something in my overdressed forays into the Australian bush.

I'm intrigued to hear how your foundation of photography began; as an avid photographer myself I found my inspiration from my two nieces.

Love to see more of your work. What a breath of fresh air you are in saying what you did. Most people would not admit it and I appreciate that you did.

The art of sharing the uniqueness of what you can see that others don't and share it in your photographs is a gift. Thank you for sharing.
