Fashion MUST-HAVES

Description:
FROM RUNWAY TO STREET, HERE ARE OUR SPRING PICKS FOR THE REAL WORLD DOLL
by Sandra Mendoza-Daly, Debutante Clothing, Fashiontribes.com Downtown Doll Executive Editor

Gone are the days of the waspy waist and demure lines. Spring runways were alive with color and drama reminiscent of the 60s and 80s. During these decades, fashion was edgy, architectural, and over the top. In the 60s, designers gave the female body a little breathing room with A-lines and tent dresses. In the 80s, it was all about over-indulging; color was bold, avant-garde reigned. Adding a few key pieces to your Spring wardrobe will give a nod to the trends, without giving up your own unique style.

COLOR & DRESS LINES: anything bold

Most forecasts are calling for yellow and blue, but you can always go with a shocking pink, or a chartreuse (one of my personal faves). Try a 60s mod tent or trapeze dress, an easy shift, or a shirtdress.

DAY PIECES: Natural to high-waisted Jeans

High waist jeans started to make a buzz last year, but were overcome by the revival of the skinny. High waists are such a breath of fresh air after what seems like a decade of low rise, ass-crack jeans. The reason I say higher waisted rather than just plain high waist is that our mental gauge of what a waistline is has been skewed. Your natural waist is the smallest part of your waist, which is above your navel; anything above that would be high waisted. Miss Sixty and Diesel have some amazing higher waisted jeans, but they they are kind of extreme so they might not be for everyone.

If you blow raspberries at trends, if your style is so unique and cool that you don’t bother with the fashion rags (mags), I implore you-get some higher waisted jeans. Here are three great reasons:

1. they make your butt look amazing
2. they lengthen you by focusing on the torso
3. they look great on everyone

ACCESSORIES: icy, chunky lucite or impressive metals.

Oscar de la Renta draped his models necks with icy cubes of lucite while Yohji Yamamoto cuffed the neck with a swirl of metal. Vintage lucite and crystal necklaces in clear or transparent colors will take you from runway to real life. For a more daring, sculptural look, try a metal breastplate necklace.
