“The inherently public nature of traditional social networks severely limits their depth, generally relegating their members to reinforcing already existing relationships through superficial banter,” notes Armen Berjikly, the founder of a novel social networking community that that encourages people to delve beneath the surface and find support and friendship based on shared life experiences. Because Experience Project is anonymous, members can connect to other members without fear of embarrassment or recognition.

From serious issues such as coping with diabetes, to the whimsical (memories of a first kiss), members share experiences & wisdom. The site then automatically suggests connections with other users that have similar backgrounds; the more experiences the members have in common, the stronger their mutual understanding, support and friendship. “The Experience Project liberates members to explore all facets of their lives without fear of embarrassment or retribution, while facilitating new and deep connections between people who understand each other by virtue of having common experiences. It’s a place where members can make new and meaningful connections based on who they are, not who they know.”

SO WHERE DO YOU RATE ON THE INTWINE-O-METER?

To measure how members are intertwining, the site publishes a frequent “Zeitgest” which ranks the most popular search terms. For 2006, relationships, friends, and love came out on top, intertwined with a dose of Kramer, Colbert, and crime. “Because no one is defined by any single thing, it is very exciting to see the sheer breadth of how people are connecting to each other in the community, incorporating elements of extraordinary experiences, daily life and pop culture," says Berjikly. "Some issues in life are universal, such as relationships, friends and health, so it is not surprising that people are turning to The Experience Project to quickly find others who really understand their personal situation.”

The 2006 Experience Project Zeitgeist:

1) Relationships
2) Friends
3) Love
4) Drugs
5) Depression
6) Kiss
7) Colbert
8 Crime
9 School
10) Health
11) Kramer
12) Cheating
13) Father
14) Lost Love
15) Abuse
