Harry Bosch is back working cases in the Open/Unsolved Unit with his old partner Kiz Rider when he gets a second shot at a case that has haunted him for 13 years. A chance arrest of a serial killer results in a confession to the 1993 murder of Marie Gesto, a young equestrian whose body was never found. It was Harry's case and it looks as if he missed a vital clue which might have stopped the killer nine corpses back... but something seems contrived about the whole set-up and Harry digs in. The continuing growth and complexity of Connelly's characters would pull us in if they were only playing cards ─ but with Harry the stakes are always much, much higher.
