Twice I have been blessed by being selected. First by You Too, the classic brown Maine Coon Tabby I described above, who appeared one day on my doorstep and adopted me. 

Fortune found me again when I discovered Sarah Crosier’s insightful Gentle Giants Weekly Newsletter and she and her husband Glen asked me to write this introduction for Maine Coon Magic! 

What qualifies me to be given such an honor? Is it my Veterinarian degree, my Pulitzer Prize, my Best-in Show ribbons? Probably not, as I have none of these things. However, upon reflection, what I do have is the perspective of being adopted by a homeless Maine Coon who selected me when I was 45 years old and had never had a pet before, EVER! And yes, the Maine Coon who became known to me as You Too, was not invited to my house for our first meeting. He just arrived, and that was that. He became a permanent resident and an amazing companion. 

To this day, I felt blessed by good fortune, and am indebted to You Too, and to Maine Coon Magic! for changing my life in so many ways. It was my early experience with this remarkable breed of cat, which inspired my own book, “Me and You Too: Catalyst” 

Was the miracle gift of this feline’s companionship just a random happenstance? Why me? Why stop at my house in a row of look-alike town homes? The bond between me and You Too led me to search for answers. My fascination and wide-eyed joy was unrelenting. I discovered the compelling possibility that the explanation lies in our DNA – the genetically wired, unalterable affinity humans have for nature and other living creatures. 

What E.O Wilson, Harvard Professor and real, two-time Pulitzer winner, has defined as the Biophilia Hypothesis: The Human Bond with Other Species. Fortunately, this Maine Coon sensed it was time to ignite my dormant Biophilia and create a pet passionate ambassador. I hope I prove to be a worthy choice.
