Community Outreach As Endangered Species Chocolate grows, our chocolate products work hard to fund endangered species recovery projects, conserve habitats and honor human life. All life is precious deserves our respect, kindness and care and through our products we seek to ignite this kindness. Because ESC strives to educate people on our core value "Reverence for Life", we have been actively involved in educational programs in schools, conventions and programs around the country and here in the Indianapolis community. Since our move here to Indianapolis in July of 2005, we have been actively involved in several programs around the area and have partnered up with an organization that also represents our ideal of helping our fellow humans, Second Helpings. Since october ESC has donated several pounds of our gourmet, all-natural, ethically traded bars to help Second Helpings feed the hungry and help the needy. Second Helpings Second Helpings began to take shape in 1995. Three local chefs from different areas of the food service industry began to discuss solutions to four problems that they all experienced.First, they saw a tremendous amount of waste in the food service industry, waste that was contributing to the size of the communities landfill. Secondly, they were aware that local programs serving the disadvantaged often struggled to provide for their clients' the most basic nutritional needs. Next, as food service professionals, they were aware of how difficult it was to find employees with the skills needed to be productive in a commercial kitchen.Last, they knew that many adults struggled in poverty and low-wage jobs because they lacked the basic skills that would allow them to earn more and build a career. Together, Kristen Cordoza, Bob Koch and Jean Paison set out to build an organization that could transform a resource that was once wasted into meals and jobs. Second Helpings began operations in 1998 and provided food service to a small handfull of non-profit organizations. It grew much faster than anyone had anticipated. In Second Helpings' first full month of operation, 37 volunteers helped to rescue 7,099 pounds of food and prepare 3,074 meals. Now within a few short years, Second Helpings is serving over 45,000 meals and rescuing more than 100,000 pounds of prepared and perishable food product a month. Gleaners Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit, was founded in a 3-1/2 car garage in 1980 by a group of people concerned about the growing problem of hunger in Indianapolis. Early in 1981, Gleaners received a grant from the Lilly Endowment to network with Indiana communities that wanted to develop food banks. Today, nine food banks operate to provide food to charities that feed the hungry. As Gleaners enters its 25th year, the food bank has distributed more than 173 million pounds of food and critical grocery products to charities that serve the people in need of emergency food assistance. Feed The Children Since inception by Larry and Frances Jones in 1979, Feed The Children has grown into one of the world's largest and most efficient charities devoted to helping children and families in need. The mission of Feed The Children is to deliver food, medicine, clothing, educational materials and other necessities to those who lack these essentials due to poverty, natural disaster, war or famine. Last year, Feed The Children shipped 183 million pounds of food and living necessities to children and families in all 50 states and internationally, supplementing more than 1.4 million meals everyday worldwide. In the past 27 years, Feed The Children has provided help to the needy in 118 countries around the world. When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast last year, Feed The Children responded with unprecedented disaster relief. To date, over 600 semi tractor-trailers have been sent to the Gulf Coast ˆ equaling more than 14 million pounds of donated food and relief supplies. Feed The Children remains committed to being a first responder to any natural or man-made disaster anywhere in the world and staying until the last needs are met. Feed The Children nourishes more than the body and the soul; we also aim to feed the mind. Children in the United States receive books and school supplies to encourage education. Self-help development programs initiated by Feed The Children encourage families in foreign countries to be self-sufficient by learning and applying new, marketable skills. You alone can change the life of a child. Stand with Feed The Children as we reach out to the smallest victims of hunger ˆ the children.
