We all know how hard it is, we've all been hungry, we have all had drugs and abuse in our lives, who are we?

I am a mixed blood native american, My mother is an Oglala Lakota from Pine ridge South Dakota, My fathers people were frome Whales and the combination of that, was me. I grew up in an era in the 70s of the end of vietnam and the birth of native voice. I n pine Ridge we were under the constant occupation of F.B.I an national guard troops, we were the third world in the heartland, I saw the good and bad in both peoples, natives, and whites, I can niether hate or love one side more than the other, we both make mistakes, we both have people among us who want love, and those who want pain. I learned photography and I now find the images of both people in fire and light. Its never easy in the art world, we, artists, hope to be discovered, but we are all starving and our relationships suffer in that starvation. Our relationships with art, with friends, lovers, each other. This economy, this governmental future has been bashed against the rocks by this President, yes, we are starving, we are hungry for change as well as food. This is my photo of what is running wild in washington.

    Orchestrated Harmonies

    cvb20:Q09WSUJFVE3Qvy5fF-oDYoR-.jpg

My name is Krystal Kerr and I am entering my work into the photography category. The title of this piece is Orchestrated Harmonies.

All of us develop attachments to objects that are symbolic of memories and important aspects of our lives. My photographs focus on objects I have encountered or collected and have embodied my spirit from childhood to the present-day. My memories, experiences, and interpretations on life encapsulate these objects that I feel a strong connection with. I find inspiration in the fragmented memories and different gender roles that I related to as a child. I am very intrigued by the cycles of nature and the remnants that it leaves behind.

I have come to the point in my life where I am tired of not fulfilling my dreams; I want to be able to support myself doing what truly makes me happy. So this year I started my own photography business and I am slowly trying to transition away from my 9-5 job into self employment. Photography is a very expensive passion, and I find myself spending all of my spare money each month on more equipment that will help get my business going. I do not have a studio, and I am currently live in a very small apartment where there is no space to do any sort of photography in my home. If I win this contest, it will definitely allow me to acquire some of the more expensive equipment that I have not been able to afford, and help further my dream of becoming a self employed artist!

Well, I'm Nikki and this is an entry for the Photography category. I'm still relatively new to photography; I've had my camera about 2 years now. Inspired by MOLI's very own Sherry, I recently had the opportunity to photograph Tyla (of the Dogs D'Amour) at a local show. I had a lot of fun with it and I'm pleased with the results but now I'm itching to do more! If my rent was paid for a month I could buy a faster zoom lens which would be a huge advantage for live band photography and it would also enable me to get out to extra gigs for photographing and networking (transport is expensive, especially here in the UK).

    Thanks for reading!

First a statement, then the link:

Photography is not in the camera, but in the eye, mind and spirit of life. I took this entry with a twelve dollar camera. Even though, in the past, I have been to major events, and seen celebrities from "A to Z" , this is the picture that haunts me.

Haunting me with memories of what the forest and what the world is truly like. If you ever want to step into your most present moment, walk into the forest. Leave your tripods, your ten-pound lenses and your gear at home. Walk with the plastic camera and your own eyes. You will return with what really is -when it is, and your most present moment in life.

The forest is a mystery that goes on and on each day we exist. With a thank you to Outward Bound, I enter this picture, my photography in the Starving Artist's Contest.

I am not starving and I am glad of that. But you can pay my rent anytime and that will help me get back to the forest of my life, right here, in my present moment.

Here is a link to my photography and to my writing about the picture, the forest, the coat hook

Starving Artist Entry - My coat hook, Pisgah, NC

One "Starving Artist" entry here, a

    PHOTOGRAPH AND WRITING:

My coat hook, Pisgah Forest, North Carolina

If it must be entered into only one category, then I would enter it into Photography. But I choose to enter it into a category called, "Photography and Writing").

Even after seeing fifteen states from a tourist's point of view, this image from the Pisgah forest is one that will last a lifetime. I took this with a $12.00 plastic "sports" camera. (Takes four pictures with one press of the shutter button). On "solo" night in the forest, I learned that the forest is a most peaceful, natural, learning, growing place. In my collection of photographs, I have historical, one-of-a-kind photographs, art and writing. Been to the White House, been to Inaugurations, seen celebrities from "A to Z", but this photograph is the one that follows me everywhere. It is a most haunting photograph, because it reminds me of the day that I truly discovered what a forest is really like. One can see a forest in a magazine or on television and imagine what it is like, but no one really knows, until they enter inside of this mystery called, "The Forest" .

Starving artist entry here. Though I have done over sixty-five public art/writing exhibits in New York City, I do not sell my work. My photography, collage, writing is free for everyone to view, read and enjoy.

This faded image of the forest and my coat hook (Look close and you will see my jacket), is like the faded but everlasting image in my mind of that one week in the forest, in the wilderness.

If you ever want to really experience and live in your most present moment, walk into the forest and you will be right there.

Other wilderness students who were there that trip saw a tree fall, just fall. It's life was over, and it just fell. We heard it from the distance and had no idea what that sound was. After all, we had hiked to the middle of nowhere and then hiked another few miles from there too. What could that sound have been?

Yes, when a tree falls in the forest, you do hear it. And, some even see it.

I am struggling to make it through the last few months of my graduate degree. I am determined to make it as an artist and I believe I am on the right track. I am getting into shows and have job bites, but nothing is paying. Any job I get won't start until I am done with school, which won't be until December. To save money I have quit smoking, I only eat cereal, and I only drink coffee that I brew. Please help me get through these last months of school with your financial support.

This piece is titled "Dick Gives Props." It is a documentary print of a performance in which I imagined what it would be like to be a man.

    Train Ride in Skagway Alaska

While enjoying Alaska and a train ride thru the country, I stepped out on the platform between the cars and snapped this pictures. No modifications have been done to this picture.

    cvb20:Q09WSUJFVE3QvylUHPwJaY9-.jpg

Hello, I am a photographer who loves to show the world thru my pictures. My friends have always loved the pictures that I take and I enjoy sharing the world with all who see them. I have been taking pictures since I was little with my first Brownie camera. I took this picture while riding the white rail pass train in Skagway Alaska. I stepped between the 2 cars to get this picture while the train was going around a corner. I love the simplicity of it and I feel that it shows the beauty that is Alaska.

Hope that you enjoy it also.
    Thanks.

Hi, my name is Lexy. I am entering under the "photography" category.

I am currently the youngest photographer I know that is trying to break into the business. I love taking pictures and have my camera in hand wherever I go. I believe that my style is simple, but yet original.
Although my youth may be a challenge and adults often underestimate me, I'm still inspired to give it my all.
I hope by entering this contest, it will give me the opportunity to be known as a photographer and not as "the kid with a camera."

My entry belongs in the Photography category, although my profile displays the varied nature of my work. This photo has not been altered in any way. It's what happens to me when I've been soaking up sunshine. Light goes in, light pours out. Life can be very good sometimes. I've been a starving artist since I was 14. By that age, I'd already been thoroughly duped into believing that I had nothing extraordinary to offer this world. I earned my BA degree in fashion merchandising (which allowed me a few art courses along with the approved business training), and I did my best to aid my husband as we traveled the world at his company's expense. Our address changed as we moved around the globe from Pennsylvania and California (USA), Seoul (South Korea), Munich and Dresden (Germany), southern and northern England, and southern France. Along the way, I absorbed the culture, art, cuisine, as well as home management skills from women around the globe. I took occasional classes in Korean traditional painting and silk embroidery, English bobbin lace making, and various fine art classes. I was taking everything in, but what did I have to offer? After more than 20 years of keeping up appearances, I woke up to discover how hungry I really was. I had been created to create, and here I was starving at the feast! The last three years have been an intense battle to break the bad old habits of disparagement and distraction, and to reeducate myself to live a life to the fullest extent. The monthly Starving Artist stipend will allow me to share what I've learned along the way. I have been developing a creativity discovery course, and currently do not have the means to prepare a studio in which I can invite others. The corner of my bedroom is not suited for my vision! Blessings on all of you who are seeking to become more than you are today.

I am an artist working exclusively with the self portrait photograph as a tool for exploring ideas of identity, gender, myth and archetype. I am not a photographer or a narcissist, but a performance artist with a camera. Using a combination of light, makeup, wigs, costumes, props and physical nuance I create a multiplicity of identities and freeze them in the still photograph. I want to push the boundaries of what I define as self and other by playing with ideas of identity, gender and archetype and the myriad ways in which they can be represented.

I am currently working entirely with household lighting, including floor lamps, flashlights and window light. I currently do not have a studio, but work with a small wall in my one bedroom apartment. All costuming, styling, makeup, photography and post processing are self-created. I could DEFINTELY use the winnings from this contest to further my art!!

The piece I am entering was created from real eggshells, adhered one at a time to my face. You can see more of my work on my website.

Here is my starving artist story. I am a photographer. But i am also a mother of 2 soon to be 3. I am lucky enough to have a husband that beleives in my dream, and in this day in age having only one working parent is usually a sign of a man or women with a good job, my husband does ok and I do odd jobs to keep thinks flowing. But I live in Salem Oregon which is small and big all at the same time. I am not at "professional" level yet. So paid gigs are very few and far between. I am going to school raising a family and trying to keep my art at the forfront of everthing else. I have my camera and me no other fancy equipment. And around here people can easily find a professional photographer for fairly cheap. So I really have to stand out. I have been taking pictures since I got my first camera at age 5. I took photo classes in high school and never wanted to leave the dark room. Someday i hope to have my own business as a professional photographer and be able to make others happy threw my art.

Well, I am entering the Struggling Artist contest because, as of a couple of weeks before Christmas, I have been paying for vet visit after vet visit for my cat, Taz. He got really sick one night, and the following morning I took him to the vet, where he had to stay over the weekend. He was diagnosed with Diabetes. He also had a horrid Urinary Tract Infection, because apparently animals with diabetes get infections VERY easily. So, every morning we have to give him a shot of insulin, as well as we must feed him a special diabetic cat food. It is very expensive, and I've been taking him to the vet every few weeks, and the fees are definitely worth my baby's life, so I'm getting broker and broker every visit. This picture is of Taz in a sunroom at our old house, lying on the treadmill. I am entering it into the digital camera catagory. Anyway, he is the love of my life next to my husband, and he's kept me going the past 12 years, and I would do anything for him, even if it means being broker than broke. I love him, I even have his paw prints and name tattoo'd on me.

I haven't starved to death yet. I make woolly sculptures , paint, do photography projects, and video too. Whatever it takes. I currently don't have a work studio, the typical kick-the artists-out-of-the-building-to-make-condos scenerio. Instead of looking to find a new studio to move my piles of stuff into, I have been researching traveling long distance by horse to ride across the country coast to coast. I want to break the studio work cycle and find something new.

A friend of mine has a sister in Colorado who is moving to Wisconsin, and she has a horse that needs to get to Wisconsin too. They asked me if I would ride it there, so I am! I need all the support I can get. I will still have my rent to take care of in NYC, storage rent, and since I won't be working for over a month...well, expenses expenses! I am entering this photo that is from a series I've been working on called 'Cleavage'. My models are friends and family. In exchange for modeling I give them an artist proof print. It is a way for people to afford a piece of work, and helps me out too! FairTrade i think it is called. Anyway, incase you can't tell, it is an ass. Cleavage for world peace!

OK, I know I technically can't win cause I work for MOLI, but I was a
starving artist once too, damnit! So i'm entering a photograph anyway!
You can still leave me nice comments! :)

I went to NYU for Photography and all 4 years of college I waitressed
at a little rock club in NYC called The Continental. I saved tip money
for film and developing and worked my butt off! I would bring my camera
to work and shoot bands in between serving drinks. I'd come in on my
nights off and shoot friends bands. I photographed bands at every dive
bar, club, and rock joint in Greenwich Village! I eventually became the
house photographer at the Continental and if you've been there before
it was turned into a ... dare I say... sports bar (ugh!), my photos
were hanging all over the walls! I ended up shooting for local
newspapers and magazines, including Revolver Magazine. In 2002 I moved
out to LA where I continue to shoot as a hobby, while working for this
awesome little company called MOLI! hehe I'm happy to say im
technically not starving anymore.. but one of these days my photos WILL
appear in Rolling Stone Magazine! :)

I'm entering this photo I shot of INXS in the Photography category.
