Since its inception, Point Foundation has graduated 26 Point Scholars who make up the current Alumni Association. Point is proud of its scholars as well as its alumni. Among the Point Alumni are published authors, college professors, attorneys, scientists, public policy advocates and students pursuing additional degrees, spread from New York to Los Angeles and beyond. The Alumni Association will continue to grow and receive support from Point Foundation. The encouragement provided during school continues post-graduation and changes to meet the needs of all alumni. Each year the Alumni Association meets for a weekend to discuss these needs and set goals for the next year. Needs such as financial planning, job interview skills, resume preparation came up at this year’s conference. Solutions for continuing support along these lines include the creation of a private Point Alumni website (whose public page you are currently visiting) which allows for networking and provides a resource page populated by our Regents with topics such as financial planning, interview skills and resume preparation. Additionally, these topics (and many others) will be covered in our next Alumni Conference. Point Foundation’s Alumni Association is just beginning; however this first year has laid strong groundwork for future success.
Point Foundation provides financial support, mentoring and hope to meritorious students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity. Point Foundation seeks the partnership of philanthropic individuals, corporations and foundations to supply financial support, professional guidance and a network of contacts for undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students who are underprivileged and/or have been socially marginalized — principally by reason of sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity. Point Foundation recognizes that individuals may be socially marginalized or even abandoned by family, friends and society because of their sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity. Yet these lives should not be further disadvantaged as they prepare for the future.
Point Foundation attempts to identify students who are physically, intellectually and morally capable of leadership to play an influential part in the betterment of society. Point Foundation also attempts to identify students who have exceptional financial needs that would require personal assistance for personal success. Point Foundation believes that these individuals would benefit from a support system that facilitates their preparation for the future to help ensure a lifetime of effectual leadership and exceptional productivity. A college education today costs between $8,000 and $40,000 per year.
Since its inception in 2001, TPF has invested nearly $1 million in the education of outstanding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students. A Point Scholarship covers tuition, books, supplies, room and board, transportation and living expenses. In exchange, all Point Scholars agree to maintain a high level of academic performance and give back to the LGBT community through support of TPF and completion of an individual service project. By identifying and supporting these scholars, Point Foundation hopes to provide a greater level of acceptance, respect and tolerance within future generations for all persons, regardless of sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity.
Additionally, Point Foundation believes in honoring both the scholars and the donors who are investing in the future. Therefore, Point Foundation honors the donors, if they so choose, by creating a legacy named after themselves, or as a memorial for a loved one. This arrangement ensures their personal identification with scholars and with the mission of Point Foundation in perpetuity. www.pointfoundation.org
