1. What's your pleasure?

I'm up for discussing  anything about nature or the environment.  I'm a little burned out at the moment talking about global warming, so let's begin on a lighter note.  I would love to hear some observations about some interesting plant or animal near where you live.  I live in upstate New York, so as Chris Mathews always says, "Tell me something I don't know".

Have you ever noticed a solitary black ant that comes in to spy when there is a crumb accidentally dropped on the carpet? I live in Accra-Ghana and do hope you also notice these black armies wherever you live?

What happens in my living room is that this single 'soldier' disappears, and mometarily, is followed by other scouters. Sometimes I am tempted to destroy them and whatever they want to take away, but I restrain myself because I get bored about my destruction threat since wherever they hide, I know I cannot destroy them all but learn to 'accommodate' them on a nen-rent paying basis. Do you accommodate any where you live?

Re: "Some observations of an intersting plant or animal where you live" - The most interesting animal where I live is the human being.  It is amazing what kinds of things some human beings can achieve and accomplish . Yes, I know, a mammal, but still, in all respects an animal (in some places).

Men and women in my city seem to be in two categories, the givers and the takers and not many in-between.  At a large event in Brooklyn, I wrapped my inner jacket inside the outer jacket and left it in the lobby of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, while attending an event there - " as press" .  Covering the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Celebration that year, I felt confident that my jacket was safe in an opera house that was celebrating the birthday and life of a leader.

I came back later in the day, and found that some thief had unwrapped my outer (orange-color) windbreaker and stolen my beautiful blue fleece inner jacket.  Couldn't believe my eyes.  Wow. Going to the trouble to see what was inside my outer windbreaker, and taking what they wanted to take. The fact that it was done on the birthday of a leader, a peacekeeper and peace maker, the fact that it was done in a public opera house, surprised me.  Living here in this large city, I know that anything on the street is "up for grabs" but I thought that the opera house was off limits.  Surprises, every day of your life you will be surprised by the interesting animals in our land.  Humans - every day, most interesting.

Has anyone seen my blue fleece?   Ah, it was just a sentimental-type jacket, that is all.   A lesson learned - If you put your jacket down in New York City, it most likely will disappear.

Apologies if that is not the comment you are expecting.  Press the delete button and it will disappear quicker than my jacket did. Cool

QJ: if you live in an apt in Brooklyn, then you almost certainly have a House Mouse (Mus musculus) living there.  This is the wild relative of the white lab mouse, and is native to Europe.  I use Sherman live traps for all my rodent trapping in my house in the country.  I capture Deer Mice weekly here, in the garage and under the kitchen sink.

Um, did you know that the typical mouse can jump 12 inches? Yes, I live in a 120-year-old apartment building, and there is a curious mouse in my kitchen now and then.

I'm still searching for the most humane way to catch-and-release them, and I found this homemade contraption -- it's very inventive ... http://www.humanemousetrap.info/.

Still looking though for something tried and true for the little fellers.
