                          Iggy Pop: Open Up and Bleed, by Paul Trynka: Granted, you would really have to be incompetent to write a biography of perhaps the ultimate rock artist that wasn't interesting. Talk about a loaded subject matter. Trynka more than does Pop justice, and in between outrageous stories, he actually gets into the gentleman stooge's skin. One of the best rock bios I've ever read.

                          My friend Jana Martin's sterling collection of short stories, Russian Lover (Yeti Press), just got a great writeup in Time Out Chicago.

                          Shut Up and Sing: Barbara Kopple's movie of the Dixie Chicks is a music documentary that will make you froth in anger and move you to tears. It's also a portrait of America in the last few years. And maybe the best movie about a band ever. To watch Natalie Maines sing is to witness glory. Kopple catches the Chicks giving birth and reacting to death threats. Life and death stuff.
